Cruise Departs from Vancouver, B.C., Canada • June 28, 2008

DAY AT SEA (June 29)

Ketchikan (June 30, 6:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.)–
Built out over the water and climbing weathered stairways, Ketchikan clings to the shores of Tongass Narrows. Visit Creek Street, the Tongass Historical Museum, Totem Bight State Park, and the Saxman Village. There are numerous galleries exhibiting Native art and works by talented local artisans. A floatplane flightseeing trip to breathtaking Misty Fjords National Monument is a transforming adventure not to be missed.

Juneau (July 1, 8:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.)–Located at the foot of grand mountain peaks on the Gastineau Channel, the town of Juneau has the massive Mendenhall Glacier and the immense Juneau Icefields at its back door. Visit the rustic shops in town or get out and kayak, dogsled, raft, bike, hike, heli-hike, flightsee, or fish. There’s no end to the adventure because we’re in port long enough to truly take advantage of the long daylight hours.

Skagway (July 2, 7:00 a.m.–8:30 p.m.)–Few one-time boomtowns retain the flavor of the gold rush days like Skagway. This gateway to the Klondike is preserved as a national historic park with its rustic boardwalk and frontier-style storefronts. Due to its geographic location, Skagway enjoys a drier climate compared to the rest of southeastern Alaska, with an average annual precipitation of only 22 inches.

Cruising Glacier Bay National Park (July 3, 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.) –This spectacular national park and preserve displays massive glaciers that stretch 3.3 million acres from the St. Elias and Fairweather mountain ranges to the ends of the fjords. It is home to an amazing world of marine life, including humpback whales, sea otters, porpoises and harbor seals. It also possesses the highest concentration of tidewater glaciers on the planet. Access is extremely limited.

Cruising College Fjord, Alaksa (July 4,  5:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m.)–Some of the best glacier viewing in the state can be seen tucked into the northwest corner of Prince William Sound at College Fjord. Winding down from mountains and through valleys and fjords, these massive rivers of ice are often on the move, periodically dropping their bounty into the sea. This fjord boasts the largest collection of tidewater glaciers in the world. There are 16 glaciers named after Ivy League colleges by the Harriman Expedition that discovered them in 1899.
